In the Beginning.......
During the fall of 2003, David & Randy fantasized, like many times before, of starting an independent winterguard. David had been teaching outdoor guard since 1998 and Randy was just beginning to teach outdoor guard, but they both missed being involved with indoor color guard. David was attending Morehead State University so that became the location that they would pull their first members from.
2004 Show - The Essence of Winter, music Winter by A. Vivaldi
End of the season results: 3rd Place 78.90
The 2004 season was very rough at times. We had seven (7) members that year. So many new things to learn about, such as: finding rehearsal facilities, paying for everything and getting people to commit to a new organization. One of the biggest challenges of the season was the fact that most of the 2004 members lacked real training. Through lots of hard work, fundamentals and hours of cleaning, the 2004 guard finished the season with the Bronze Medal at Tri-State Circuit Championships. We had one age out that season, Noelle Barnes. Noelle brought talent and experience to the guard that was much appreciated. One of the other members that season, Sam Baker, made Pride of Cincinnati the following season and has marched every year since. (05-06-07-08)
2005 Show - Did Not Compete
The 2005 season was even harder than 2004. We had a very hard time finding members. We had three returners from 2004 and couldn't get enough others to commit. We finally got someone to join us and they injured their ankle, so we were unable to compete because we only had 4 members. We took the season off to regroup and plan for 2006.
2006 Show - There is Hope in the Darkness, music by: Coheed & Cambria and Savage Garden
End of the Season Results: Fourth Place 80.80
The 2006 season brought new life to the organization. We had eight (8) members that year. David and Randy decided that since they were having trouble getting the numbers they needed from Morehead, they would look to their roots in Huntington, WV at Marshall University. With five(5) members from Morehead and three (3) from Marshall, we were on our way to a great season. Something else was different this season. I had met a drill writer when working with a band in Lexington,KY. After the marching season drew to a close, I thought we could use his talents on our staff. At that time, Jason Bentley joined our design team. He brought a fresh outlook to staging as well as help with developing the soundtrack and show concept. The season was going well and we were consistantly in third place behind two very established WGI guards. At championships we experienced errors that had never happened before and lost our medal by 0.20. We had one age-out that season, Mark Hopkins. He literally learned how to spin before auditions and made it due to his amazing work ethic.

End of the Season Results: First Place 86.20
The 2007 season brought new adventures. We had seven (7) members that year. This was the first season that the guard came out before the last week in February. We also did our first Tri-State Circuit Preview show and then attended the Grant County show at the end of January. The organization took the next step and we attended our first WGI Regional on February 10, 2007. We finished 8th out of 14 and missed finals by .40. This was a very successful season for us, we were undefeated in our circuit and finished the season with the Gold Medal in Independent A. We had two age-outs that year, Angie Castle and Christine Shirey. Angie had been with us since the beginning, so it was very sad to see her leave. However, it is some consolation that we still get to see her at shows performing with Onyx World. Christine has graduated from college and is working in her field as well as building a guard program in Southern West Virginia.
The 2008 season is being written.......we took the next step and competed at the WGI World Championships in Dayton,OH......check back for details on how the season unfolded.

2009 Two-Time
WGI Power-Regional Finalist

Expressions advances to Semi-Finals Competition at WGI in the final week of the season. At the Dayton Power-Regional we completed one of our big goals by advancing to Finals competiton. A few weeks later we went above our goals by advancing to Finals competition at the Indianapolis Power-Regional.
Before we knew, it was time for Tri-State Circuit Championships. With a score of 84.6, we recieved the Bronze Medal behind Elizabethtown Independent (Gold) and O2(silver). Just a few short days after circuit championships it was time to head to Dayton, OH for WGI.
Pre-lims was an interesting day for us. Going on very early in the morning, we had to wait all day to see what the results would bring. Mid-way through the day we heard the score for Urban Expressions and come to find out we had a tie with a score of 81.8.
When all of the competing units were finished, the judges found a tabulation error. All of a sudden, we had a three way tie adding Cadets of South Shore to the list. Not only was there a three way tie, but it was for the last spot into WGI Semi-Finals competition. We were all excited to get the chance to compete in WGI Semi-Finals.
